“When you’ve got thunder and you’ve got mud, you’ve got it all.” - director Penelope Spheeris speaking to the Los Angeles Times, 1989
Bring your mud and impossibly tight pants to the Whammy arena for a celebration of the First (and Last) Annual THUD Show (an acronym that somehow stands for The Heavy Metal Thunder and Mud Show).
The concert brought together the “great visuals and sexual overtones” of heavy metal and mud wrestling for a thrillingly stupid pay-per-view event, mercifully released to VHS. Filmed at the Hollywood Tropicana and co-hosted by DJ/ Leather Nun Tawn Mastrey and Jessica Hahn (the model/actress whose sex scandal with televangelist Jim Bakker led to his resignation), this is a can’t-miss event for fans of brazen bad taste, ludicrous, over the top, and sleazy sights and sounds. Thunder and Mud is a gorgeously mind-numbing descent into filth directed by Penelope Spheeris and it plays like a spinoff of her classic The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years and features some of the same bands.
As producer Paul Colichman said in 1989, “When Penelope does it, it’s art... She’s a genius.”
